Clarithromycin
Manufacture: John Lee Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd.
Clarithromycin is used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as pneumonia (a lung infection), bronchitis (infection of the tubes leading to the lungs), and infections of the ears, sinuses, skin, and throat. It also is used to treat and prevent disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infection - a type of lung infection that often affects people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It is used in combination with other medications to eliminate H. pylori, a bacterium that causes ulcers.
Generic Name
Clarithromycin
Common Uses
Clarithromycin is used to treat bacterial infections, including respiratory infections (such as bronchitis and pneumonia), skin infections, and infections of the throat (pharyngitis or tonsillitis). Additionally, it may be prescribed as part of a multi-drug treatment plan to eradicate Helicobacter pylori in patients with ulcers.
How to Take
Take Clarithromycin exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, usually once or twice a day, with or without food. For best results, take it at the same time each day. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water, and avoid crushing or chewing it unless instructed by your provider. It is essential to complete the full course of treatment, even if you feel better, to ensure that the infection is fully eradicated.
Warnings and Precautions
Before using Clarithromycin, inform your doctor if you have any allergies, especially to macrolide antibiotics like azithromycin or erythromycin. Patients with liver disease, kidney disease, or a history of heart conditions should consult their healthcare provider before taking this medication. Clarithromycin can interact with certain medications, so discuss your current medications with your doctor to avoid potential drug interactions. Avoid taking this medication during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless directed by your doctor.
Missed Dose/Overdose
If you miss a dose of Clarithromycin, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose—do not double the dose. In the event of an overdose, seek immediate medical attention. Overdose symptoms may include severe nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
Storage
Store Clarithromycin at room temperature, away from direct light, heat, and moisture. Keep it out of reach of children and pets. Do not store this medication in the bathroom or other humid environments, as moisture can affect its stability and effectiveness.
Possible Side Effects
Common side effects of Clarithromycin may include mild gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort. Some patients may experience a metallic or bitter taste. Serious side effects are rare but may include signs of liver issues (e.g., yellowing skin or eyes), severe dizziness, or an irregular heartbeat. If you experience any unusual or severe symptoms, seek medical assistance promptly.
