Yasmin prevents ovulation (the release of an egg from an ovary) and also cause changes in your cervical and uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to reach the uterus and harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus. Yasmin is used as contraception to prevent pregnancy. It is also used to treat moderate acne in women who are at least 14 years old and have started having menstrual periods, and who wish to use birth control pills to prevent pregnancy. This medication is also used to treat the symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), such as anxiety, depression, irritability, trouble concentrating, lack of energy, sleep or appetite changes, breast tenderness, joint or muscle pain, headache, and weight gain. Yasmin may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Yasmin is a combined oral contraceptive pill that contains two active ingredients: drospirenone, a synthetic progestin, and ethinylestradiol, a synthetic form of estrogen. It is primarily used as a method of birth control, providing highly effective prevention against pregnancy when taken as directed. In addition to its contraceptive benefits, Yasmin is also used to regulate menstrual cycles, reduce the risk of ovarian cysts, and manage symptoms of acne or moderate to severe premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) in women who seek an oral contraceptive for these concerns. Yasmin has the added benefit of a unique progestin component, drospirenone, which has a mild anti-androgenic effect, making it particularly effective for those prone to acne or excess hair growth due to hormonal imbalances.

Yasmin works by preventing ovulation, meaning that it stops the ovaries from releasing eggs. It also thickens the cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to enter the uterus, and alters the uterine lining to prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg. For many women, Yasmin offers additional benefits, including reduced menstrual cramps, lighter periods, and more predictable cycles. It is also frequently prescribed to those suffering from hormonal-related acne, as the hormonal balance it provides can significantly improve the condition. In addition to its contraceptive and cosmetic benefits, Yasmin is also helpful for managing the long-term health of women by reducing the risk of ovarian cysts and endometrial cancer.
